Egg Freezing round 1

This is a semi-comical experience I had during my first round and I’m excited to share!!!

Day 1

Not sure it could be any worse than this but it can only go up from here!!!

I set everything up on the table displayed and organized cause that's what you do, set everything up so it looks pretty. Being organized is also important so it's clean and easier to follow the many small steps that will become a routine.  I started with the gonal f pen cause that’s the easiest to administer.

I set the pen to 150 units and got enough courage to poke myself.  I pulled out the needle, looked at the side of the pen where it displays numbers, only to realize I injected 25 of the 150 units of gonal f!!!! I now have to poke again to administer the remaining 125 units cause I did not press the button hard enough.  Rookie mistake.

Let’s move on to the good stuff cause there is no way I’m going to let the botched gonal f injection be the highlight of night 1.

I then prepare the menopur as described by my doctor,  I personally had to take 2 vials of 75 units and mix those with 1ml of water.  Seems complicated but very easy once you do it a few times. I have it drawn up in  a syringe to then realize the needles I have don’t fit! Panic sets in. It’s already mixed. It’s like GOLD and needs to be used ASAP.

I grab my phone and google 24 hour pharmacy because naturally I start my first injections at 12am. No one to call, nothing is open, just me and my medicine at the kitchen table.

I get an Uber to Duane Reade. The pharmacist already spoke to me on the phone so he knows I’m crazy!!! He starts pulling out random needles until we find the smallest gauge he has. Give me alcohol swab, I draw the menopur from the vial via the correct needle and I inject myself, right there, in the middle of the store. I didn’t care who saw or what I looked like, all I cared about was injecting that medication.

Not sure the alcohol swab will save me from the possible things that were touched, packed, moved and carried but a little dirt never hurt no one right?! But really, I think I’ll be ok.

Sweet man did not charge me for anything and even gave me a few backups so this never happens again. However, he probably just never wants to see me at 1:15am again, freaking out over a tiny vial either.

Lesson I learned...... don’t wait till midnight to try something new like this when little help is available. But when my back is against the wall and the clock is ticking I fucking perform. Like. A. Machine. No time to think about the pain, just survival mode to get that menopur in my body and on track to the end goal.

This process is stressful, being perfect and precise, performing everything as directed and processing mentally what’s going on is hard. So if you do something like beg the guy at the pharmacy to hook you up with needles at 1:15am, so be it. After everything is done for the nightly routine, laugh. Laugh cause it’s funny. Not only is this a journey to reach a goal but it will become a memory of where you have been.

List of medications I am using for my first round of Egg Freezing.

Menopur 150 units
